Thankful Thursday 30 June 2022

Today is the last Thursday in June and you know what else this is the last Thursday for?! This is my last Thursday being 32. Come Monday, I’ll be 33 years young!

Tommy and I are spending the weekend together and I’m really looking forward to it. I truly do have the best boyfriend in the world, or at least my little corner of the world. I have some plans and Tommy’s just as excited. We’re planning to see Lucy the Elephant and I want to do it later in the day, so that way we can see the sunset. I’ll have to map it better to see if it’s near a beach, if not, we’ll do it a bit earlier and head back to A.C. to watch the sunset on the beach (never mind, she closes at 5 on Sunday, so we’ll see her close to 4, then go back to A.C. for the sunset). I’ve always wanted to do this with a loved one. Neither of us have seen Lucy and it’ll be our first sunset together on the beach. So grateful for my travel partner!

I took down my Happiness Box display at the library today. Everyone was sad to see it go, but I promised that I would display scrapbooks next year! I will have plenty to showcase. I’m thankful that my display was well received.

I’m also thankful for my jobs, co-workers, friends, and family. What are you grateful for today?

  1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Wow, dear friend, I wish you a happy birthday in advance, just in case you are too busy in the days ahead to do the social media thing. Seems we’ve been following each other since you were in your mid 20s. Congratulations on hanging in there during tough times, negotiating the white water rapids of life and arriving at a stage where you are happier than you have been in a long time. I’m glad to see it.

I needed to look up Lucy the Elephant because I never saw or heard of her. I see that she is a 6-story high piece of novelty architecture constructed in 1881 to promote real estate sales and attract tourists. As such, Lucy is the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America. I saw pictures of her just now and know you guys will have fun seeing Lucy up-close and personal. I’m sure you will take many excellent pics including some selfies posing in front of her. You will also have photo ops when you watch the sunset at the beach.

Keep in mind that while you are in the vicinity, you will be close to Memories in Margate, the nightclub where Jerry Blavat – The Geator With The Heater – held his sock hops for many years, and perhaps still does. I went to one of his dances there in the summer of 1978 or 1979.

Yessum, your Happiness Box display enjoyed a successful engagement there at the library and was well received. It’s easy to see why.

Take care and have a great weekend. Stay safe in your travels, wear sunscreen and take lots of pictures, and remember that your heart is also “taking pictures” and storing them in your mind for future reference. Country-pop artist Ronnie Dove sang about it in one of my favorite Boomer oldies, “Happy Summer Days,” a song that speaks to what is going on between you and Tommy:

    When the morning sun promises
    Another wonderful day
And good fortune is all along the way
When your heart is filled with gladness
Cause true love has come to stay
    These are happy, happy, happy
    Summer days, summer days

    Every kiss, will take us
To a new world to explore
    Bringing thrills that we
    Never knew before
When the one you love can show you
    What’s behind that magic door
    These are happy, happy, happy
    Summer days, summer days
    These are happy, happy, happy
    Summer days, summer days

Look around you, there’s a rainbow
    In that watermelon sky
And the twinkling of a million fireflies
Let your heart keep taking pictures
That we’ll share as years go by
    These are happy, happy, happy
    Summer days

    Happy birthday, dear friend JM!
